Fort Worth man shot

A 32-year-old man was shot and injured Wednesday night at the Sandy Oaks Apartments in the 1500 block of Sandy Lane in east Fort Worth, according to police. The man arrived at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound, and 22-year-old Ronquez Otis was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said the Wednesday night shooting marked the second reported shooting at the Sandy Oaks Apartments in as many days. A separate shooting occurred at the complex Tuesday morning, when a man was shot in the abdomen at 1513 Sandy Lane at approximately 7:35 a.m., according to officials. No arrests have been announced in connection with the earlier incident.

He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony in Texas punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The complex has drawn police attention in the past. In June 2024, a shooting at Sandy Oaks Apartments left a man and a woman seriously injured, according to reports. The Fort Worth Police Department’s gang unit investigated that incident, and no suspects were arrested at the time, records show.

Officers responded to the latest shooting Wednesday night after the 32-year-old victim arrived at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound, police said. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including any motive or relationship between the victim and the suspect, have not been disclosed by authorities.

Ronquez Otis was booked into the Fort Worth Jail following the incident, according to jail records. Bond information was not immediately available.

The victim’s condition has not been updated by hospital officials or police since he arrived for treatment Wednesday night.

The Sandy Oaks Apartments, located in the 1500 block of Sandy Lane in east Fort Worth, is a multi-building residential complex. The area has seen periodic violent incidents, according to police records and local crime data.

Fort Worth police have not said whether the two shootings this week are connected. Investigators have not released additional details about the Tuesday shooting victim’s condition or the circumstances leading up to that incident.

Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges require proof that the accused used or exhibited a deadly weapon during an assault that caused serious bodily injury or involved a threat of imminent harm, according to Texas penal code. Firearms are classified as deadly weapons under state law.

Otis’s arrest marks the first known charge related to either of this week’s shootings at the complex. Police continue to investigate both incidents, and officials said additional information may be released as the cases develop.

Court records show Otis has not yet appeared before a magistrate judge. A probable cause affidavit detailing the evidence against him had not been made public as of Thursday.

The repeated violence at the Sandy Oaks Apartments has raised concerns among residents, though police have not indicated any increased patrols or specific safety measures in response to this week’s incidents.

Anyone with information about either shooting is asked to contact the Fort Worth Police Department or Crime Stoppers of Tarrant County, officials said.
